Greg Bokenkamp

Greg is an East Coast transplant to the ever-so-popular Mammoth Lakes, California. He first got noticed with his raw power, riding jumps and trannies while coaching at Windell’s. This season was a life changer for him leaving the safety zone of the Mammoth Park by loading his truck and traveling with the team to film his first big video part in No Correct Way. His “ride anything” approach to snowboarding has proved to be a success and has produced a rookie part anyone would be proud of.
- Name: Greg Bokenkamp
- Years: Over 21 under 30
- Set-up: Riff 158, 390 bindings and Folsom boots
- Quote: “Have fun out there.”
It was your first real time on the road this season. Was there pressure riding with Bjorn and some of the other guys that have had tons of experience with it?
The biggest pressure I think was to hit some of the shit that Marius wanted to build! There was no easing into it for me in the beginning, just straight into sending it on some pretty big stuff. A little later in the year riding with Bjorn was mellower ‘cause he likes to take warm up fun runs, which I’m down for.
This is the first summer you have not gone to Hood. Why did you decide to skip the summer shred and what did you do with your summer?
Well, I was really hoping to get a job on the golf course but it didn’t work out. I still played a whole lot of golf though. Not going to Hood kind of just happened, but it was really nice to have some time away from shredding. I pretty much skated everyday in Mammoth, too.
Now that you’ve gotten through your first real rookie year, what is the plan for this winter?
Do you have a new approach on filming and shooting? The plans for this year are in the works. My new approach to filming is to land everything.
If you had a choice to set up a dream trip, where would you go and who would be on the crew?
I’m pretty sure I would do a South American tour. Argentina, Chile and a stop in Ecuador. It would involve snowboarding, skateboarding, golf, and jungle hikes in the Amazon Basin. I would bring everyone. I may just move down there some day.
Give me your best Dirty Joel Story?
I shouldn’t say.
Mammoth is pretty much in the middle of nowhere, why do you still call that your home base? Is there any desire to pick a new spot to live?
Mammoth really sucks to travel out of. It’s pretty much an extra day of driving wherever I go. It costs a lot to live there, but I have a comfortable situation, a good job, and I’ve met a lot of good people over the years. I may relocate for a while this winter though.
Do you still claim VT? How long have you been away?
All I have left from VT is the 802 area code on my cell phone. I’ve been away for about five years now. I’m grateful to have grown up in such a beautiful place where the quality of life is really good. It’s where my roots are; I’m not really a California kid, I just like it out there.
What is the wildest place you have ever been?
Quito, Ecuador.
Style: who has it?
People who don't even know it.
NCW? Tell us whatever you want about the film?
It was amazing to be a part of it and I can't wait to see it.
Best story of another team rider?
It involves many team riders who were very, very lucky one night in Kings Beach. I was in Reno so I was even luckier.
When you’re not shredding you’re doing what?
I’m out playing golf or skating the JLA Park.
What do you want to be doing in ten years?
A homeowner.
Last words?
Thanks to all the supportive folks out there who have helped me live this dream life. Reduce, Re-use, and Recycle – it’s important.
